Labiaplasty (nymphoplasty) reduces the size of the labia minora when they cause discomfort (enlarged labia minora, or labial hypertrophy): chafing, irritation, pain when wearing clothes, during sport or during sex. In Paris, it is performed in a clinic, as a day case, under general anaesthetic. The size and symmetry of the labia minora vary widely from one woman to another; the decision to operate is made in consultation, after an examination and full information.
Yes. Both terms mean reduction of the labia minora; “nymphoplasty” is the term mostly used in France, “labiaplasty” in English-speaking countries.
No. Labia minora that extend beyond the labia majora are a common variation in anatomy. Surgery is only considered when they cause real discomfort.
It is only offered to adult patients. In adolescents, the anatomy of the vulva is still developing.
It may be covered by the Assurance maladie (French national health insurance) when there is a recognised medical indication (functional discomfort); a purely cosmetic procedure is at your own expense. The conditions are explained at the consultation (see reimbursement and fees).
The amount depends on the indication, the clinic, the type of anaesthesia and the extent of the procedure. It is set out in the detailed quote given at the consultation, before any decision.
As a guide, sex can usually be resumed after 3 to 4 weeks, baths and swimming after about 4 weeks, and cycling and horse riding after 1 to 2 months. Healing is checked at the post-operative consultation, usually 4 to 6 weeks after the procedure.
